Appearing today on CBS"s SFace the NationS, former Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean said he doesn"t expect President Barack Obama to face a Democratic primary challenge for the 2012 presidential nomination.
SI don"t think he"s going to face an opponent in the Democratic primary, Dean told Face the Nation"s Bob Schieffer.
SI think that would be bad thing for the country and a bad thing for the Democratic Party. The history of people running against presidents in their own party is that the challenger, he loses, and then the president is weakened and loses, The Former DNC Chairman added.
Since word of the controversial tax deal Obama struck with Republicans to extend the Bush-era tax cuts came out last week, there has been speculation by some pundits and liberal bloggers that Obama might face a primary challenger in 2012, with Dean, a vocal critic of Obama"s tax deal, being named has as one of the more likely people to make that challenge.
However, Dean instead supported Obama Sunday and ended the speculation he would take on Obama, saying, SHe has done things that are terrific, but referring to the tax deal, Dean added, SThis is just not one of them.
