Obama's Tax Bill and Unemployment Benefits Continuance is Met with Opposition - ThirdAge

December is slated to be the last month for the over 2 million individuals who receive unemployment benefits. For the past few weeks the Republican majority Congress and Democrat President Obama have had the very difficult task to come up with a viable compromise to continue benefits for those in need as well as move the country forward.

President Obama under the advisement of former President Clinton, has proposed that the Bush administration employment tax cuts be extended as a benefit for those who are making less than $250,000 a year; an extension of unemployment benefits for an additional 13 months and a payroll tax holiday.

The proposed bill comes as a compromise to allow some taxes to continue to be lifted as an incentive for conservatives to allow the unemployment benefits to continue.

The plan has been strongly opposed by Democrats citing that current proposal would further tax individuals who are already struggling to make ends meet. They also feel that the bill is in the same vein as the Bush administration; giving more tax breaks to the wealthy.

Analysts show a different side of the coin, stating that unemployment benefits actually help to perpetuate the economy. As much as every dollar that is spent on unemployment, another two dollars in generated. It also has the potential to save jobs, where companies are struggling to come up with additional hours for the currently unemployed.
